Anatomy of a Garment
Tumi x Selectism
Whether you're talking cars or clothes, it's about what's under the hood as much as the logo on the grille. Here, we choose 17 of our favorite pieces and give you a point-by-point rundown of the details that make each so special.
Tumi’s ballistic nylon duffles don’t rip, are weather resistant, and easy to clean, which is why they’ve long been the quintessential overnight bag for businessmen. But more modern moguls—like Selectism managing editor Jeff Carvalho and his business partner David Fischer, who regularly tote around laptops, cameras, and other gear—need luggage that can handle more than just clothes. So they teamed up with Tumi to create the ultimate all-in-one: a bag with build-ins to accommodate every component piece you’d need for a couple of days on the road. “It’s all about simplification and condensing,” says Victor Sanz, Tumi’s director of design. Here's a breakdown of the bag's key features:

1. Laptop case: The front face of this collaboration unzips from the main body for that business meeting. What's more, if you detach it, you'll discover a hidden, external zipper on the duffel for newspapers and magazines.

2. Camera case: This unzips from the main bag, and comes with a shoulder strap. “It’s for your map, camera, iPhone, small water bottle—maybe your bus pass,” says Sanz.

3. Tote bag: Unzip this from the main cavity the same way you would the camera case—then unfurl it. “In the past,” Sanz says, “you had your business case, and you’d have to carry a messenger bag if you were going out in the afternoon.”

4. Custom lining: Tumi’s usual black nylon lining gets chestnut and red stripes—a nice complement to the blue exterior’s brown leather accents. Carvalho says, “We didn’t want to scream, ‘Look at my fluorescent orange bag!’ We wanted something sophisticated. We wanted the surprise and delight of something unexpected.”
