Brand backstory: Begun as an arch support company whose inserts were meant to give customers a “new balance,” New Balance entered the running shoe game and quickly became an early leader in athletic shoes. Its Trackster, introduced in the ’60s, was the first running shoe available in multiple widths—a feature that, along with its identifiable numbering system, has been a brand hallmark ever since. Still strong in the running and athletic markets, New Balance kicks also saw a fashion revival in the late ’90s as a retro fashion item, which has continued in collaborations with Undefeated, Heidi Klum, and J.Crew. The brand’s classic kicks just keep getting better—and more stylish.
